STAYING WELL DURING FLU SEASON

The weather is cooler and damp, the kids are back in school/daycare, and suddenly everybody is coming down with “bugs”:  diarrhea/vomiting (e.g. enterovirus), fever/aches/pains (flu), upper respiratory infections, sore throats, etc.  Most of these will simply run their courses and the patient will recover with little medical intervention.  However, many will require additional clinical support, such as antibiotics, throat (or other) cultures, IV rehydration, and more.  These interventions will require an evaluation by either a primary care physician, walk-in clinic, or emergency room visit.

IF YOU ARE NOT FEELING WELL, WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE SEEK EVALUATION BY ONE OF THESE PROFESSIONALS.  OUR OFFICE IS NOT EQUIPPED TO TREAT INFECTIOUS DISEASES, AND WE DO NOT PRESCRIBE ANTIBIOTICS.  PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE OF OUR OTHER PATIENTS AND OUR STAFF.  IF YOU REQUIRE SUPPLEMENTS DURING THIS TIME, WE WOULD BE HAPPY TO SET THEM ASIDE FOR YOU TO HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER OR FRIEND PICK THEM UP FOR YOU, OR THEY CAN BE MAILED TO YOUR HOME.

There are several things that you can do to boost your immunity and increase your resistance to infection.  A few examples:

  1. Be sure that you are getting adequate sleep (7-9 hours is optimal)
  2. Eat a “clean” diet; i.e., lots of green and/or highly-pigmented veggies, homemade soups, high-quality protein (eggs, chicken, fish, grass-fed beef; or a high-quality protein shake); berries.  Your food should have lots of colors – “eat a rainbow.”
  3. Drink a little extra fluid.  Clean water, green tea, herbal infusions, clear soups, etc.  Remember that caffeine and alcohol have a dehydrating effect upon the body and can impair your immune system.
  4. Exercise 30 minutes per day.  A simple walk is adequate and a reasonable daily goal for most people.
  5. Take a medically formulated probiotic daily to support the flora in your gut.  Your immune system resides primarily in your gut, in the form of “friendly bacteria.”  It is extremely important to cultivate and protect these “good bugs”, and to avoid encouraging the “bad bugs” with poor quality foods such as sugar, processed and “junk” foods, unnecessary antibiotics, and excessive alcohol.

There are also several medical-grade supplements that are highly recommended to have on hand, particularly at this time of year, including:
